Hamlet — Lovers in a Dangerous Time

🌹The Rose & Skull: Love & Death in Literature ☠️

Introduction

This section of Undergrad English contains two main sub-sections: the first explores Hamlet in relation to several poems and short stories, and the second explores and compares two novels: Graham Greene’s The Quiet American (1955) and Christopher Koch’s The Year of Living Dangerously (1978). Because these novels both have romances set in countries that are being torn apart by war, I borrow the song title, “Lovers in a Dangerous Time.”

The pages are drawn from online courses taught during the pandemic, and as a result they contain “Student Responses,” which are short paragraphs in which students respond to the week’s material. These were aimed at helping students 1. to see what their peers come up with, and 2. to understand what was expected of them in terms of level of analysis (I often comment on the students’ responses, so as to make these expectations clear).

I’ve also included four student essays comparing the two novels. These can be found in Betrayal & Good Intentions and Sex Trade & Orientalism
